A Guide to Golf Etiquette

Jeff from Prince Edward Island asked about some "Simple Rules of Etiquette."

Here are some "Simple rules of Etiquette", Jeff, that all golfers should practice.

Parents everywhere in the world, always ask their children, to "BEHAVE THEMSELVES" when out in public. Below you will find a short guide to golf etiquette.

There is no quarantee that our children will grow up to be good golfers----but it is important that they know how to act properly when playing. Putting it another way; they will soon run out of playing partners, no matter how good they may be, if they don't observe proper golf etiquette.

MAKE SURE THAT THEY:

• Don't talk, stand close, or move around when another player is hitting
• Make sure they are ready to play when it is their turn
• Do not waste time pacing off yardages
• Make a practice swing in an area away from other players
• Do not hit a shot when another player is within range
• Wave the group behind through if their own group is playing slowly
• Leave the course in good condition
• Always replace their divots.
• Always rake the sand in a bunker smooth after hitting from the bunker
• Always repair ballmarks on the putting green
• Always repair spikemarks before leaving the green (it is illegal to do so before putting, however)
• Do not lean on their putters on the green while waiting to putt
• Lay their bags down off the green when putting
• Lay the flagstick down off the green when putting
• Replace the flagstick in the hole before leaving the green
• Leave the green as soon as possible after completing a hole (marking scorecards should be done at the next tee)
• Park a golf cart between the green they are playing and the next tee, and not in front of the green
• Drive a golf cart on designated cart paths where available or in the rough whenever possible
• Show absolute sportsmanship and honesty. "IT'S THE HEART AND SOUL OF THE GAME."
