The "Secret" to good golf as we know it is consistency. It's a chore for the golfers who play only once a week and or never practice. We know you have some good shots in you, but you need to practice and play more to repeat them more often. In the meantime, if you can't be sure that you're going to hit a good shot, at least make sure that your golf ball is ready to be hit. Taking care of your golf ball can be essential in helping you to be more consistent. Try making the following steps, part of your regular golfing routine.
If you tee the ball way up on one hole, then way down on the next, you're asking for a miracle as the clubhead is approaching impact at a different angle each and everytime. If, on the other hand you tee the ball up, with your driver, please take care to see the ball so its equator or mid-point is opposite the top of the clubface or slightly higher. This, will enable impact which is slightly on the upswing. With fairway woods, and irons, you should tee the ball a fingers width above the top of the grass, to permit a clean shot. Uniformity in teeing up the ball, will promote consistency, which we all strive for. Let's make it easy on ourselves.
When you reach the green, always mark your ball with a marker or coin and clean the ball with a damp towel. A little mud or grass can affect the way the ball will roll, so take the time to ensure that your ball is "Ready to Roll" before every putt. Also, marking the ball allows you to reposition it to your advantage. Align the lettering on the ball, so it points down your intended line. (If it's good enough for TIGER WOODS, then why not for you or me!) This will make sure the putter and your body are properly aimed to the hole or the intended line of flight. These small changes will simplify and improve your overall performance.
