Niagara Guide Home: Niagara Golf: Golf Tips: Be "Realistic" With Your "Distance"

Be "Realistic" With Your "Distance"

While playing with a 65 year young Gentleman today named Paul, in Western New York State.

A trend crept into his play for the entire front nine holes of golf.

The trend was that of not taking enough club for each shot.

The principal reason for this is faulty expectations: At one time in his life, I am sure Paul flushed an 8-iron 150 yards, so every time a 150 yard shot comes up, he automatically selects an 8-iron.

The first step in beating this "small error in judgment" is purely Philosophical: Accept that you are never going to hit even a small percentage of your shots perfectly.

Even, the Great Ben Hogan, the Game of Golf's ultimate perfectionist, put his "perfect shots" at one or two per 18 holes.

To learn a more realistic approach, my suggestion would be to play 4 rounds consecutively in which you force yourself to take one more club than your first impulse suggests on every hole.

Swinging smoothly, by not trying for maximum distance, each and every time, it will make you more, "Consistent with your Distance."

Therefore, a few rounds of playing within yourself will help you establish realistic distances for each club through a more consistent swing speed and contact.

This exercise in "Course Management" may bruise your ego at first, but I bet your improved scores will heal the wounds quickly.

At the tenth tee, Paul was asked by myself to take one extra club, each and everytime, going into the greens.

The results were astounding. He hit 6 out of 9 greens on the first attempt, while on the front nine, he was 2 of 9.

His ear to ear smile, at the finish and the reduction of 6 shots on his back nine score, "Proved the Point" of my suggestion.
